Do As We Say, Not As We Do

Despite the UK government recently announcing a crackdown on unpaid internships it seems that the housing minister, Dominic Rabb, failed to read the memo:

Copy of the advert seeking an unpaid intern issued by Dominic Rabb.

Rabb last week issued the above advert seeking an unpaid intern for his Esher and Walton constituency which would only offer the successful candidate travel expenses to Westminster. Recent research by the Sutton Trust says that an unpaid intern would need to find a minimum of £1,019 a month to live in the capital.

The advert appeared despite business minister, Andrew Griffith, announcing “Employing unpaid interns as workers to avoid paying the national minimum wage is against the law and exploitative. No one should feel like they have to work for free to get the skills and experience they need to get ahead.

That’s why over the last three months, government enforcement teams have been targeting employers advertising for unpaid interns, reminding them of the law and the consequences of breaking it.”

Despite a note being added to the W4MP website where the advert is posted saying “The role being advertised is a voluntary one. As such, there are no set hours and responsibilities and you should be free to come and go as you wish. If the post demands set hours and/or has a specific job description you may be deemed to be a ‘worker’ and be covered by National Minimum Wage/National Living Wage legislation” the ad ends with the following text “Please state your availability, and how long you are able to commit to the position for, in your application.”

In direct contrast to this Ivan McKee, the SNP MSP for Glasgow Provan, is looking for an intern for his constituency office who will be paid the Real Living Wage (currently £8.75 per hour).
